A recent tragic incident at the Haliburton Forest Wolf Centre Sanctuary in Canada resulted in the death of a young biologist, Patricia Wyman. Patricia, a passionate new graduate in biology, had just begun working at the sanctuary where she was responsible for caring for and monitoring a pack of North American grey wolves.

Despite her fascination with wolves and the opportunity to work closely with them, Patricia met a devastating end just days after starting her dream job. On a fateful day in April 1996, Patricia entered the enclosure alone, a decision that ultimately led to her untimely demise. It is believed that she may have accidentally alerted the wolves to her presence by unlocking the main gate.

The circumstances surrounding the attack remain unclear, but it is speculated that Patricia may have tripped on fallen trees and branches in the enclosure, making her an easy target for the pack of wolves weighing up to 80kg each. Her body was discovered by two employees later that day, with the wolves standing guard over her.

Following the tragic incident, an investigation by wolf biologist Erich Klinghammer suggested that the wolves likely circled Patricia before attacking her, resulting in multiple bite wounds all over her body. Despite efforts to recover her body, the wolves had to be eliminated for public safety.

Reflecting on the incident, Klinghammer described Patricia as a brave and enthusiastic individual who was deeply passionate about working with wolves. Today, the sanctuary has expanded to include a 5000-square foot wolf center with observatories for visitors to safely observe the wolf pack in their natural habitat.
