Sky is set to introduce a new feature called Real Time for Sky Glass and Sky Stream, aimed at reducing streaming delays for millions of households. The timing of this launch coincides with the upcoming World Cup, starting Thursday, providing viewers with a more immediate viewing experience by minimizing the latency issue that often plagues sports fans using services like BBC iPlayer and ITVX.

Initially introduced for Premier League matches in 2024, the Real Time technology is now being expanded to include BBC and ITV coverage, ensuring a more synchronized viewing experience for major events like the World Cup.

In a statement, Sky announced the launch of Real Time, emphasizing its goal of bringing live sports closer to real-time action by minimizing the delay between live events and on-screen viewing. The feature will be available for select live sports broadcasts, including the World Cup matches on BBC and ITV, allowing fans to follow the action with reduced lag and fewer spoilers.

To activate Real Time on their screens, viewers can opt in during supported live sports broadcasts by selecting the Real Time option available on Sky Glass and Sky Stream devices. The feature can be accessed through an opt-in button or dedicated channels like BBC One HD RT, ITV1 HD RT, and ITV4 HD RT.

The move towards Real Time and the transition to Sky Glass and Sky Stream marks Sky’s shift away from the satellite-based Sky Q platform. These services operate over broadband, offering advantages such as easy self-installation, regular software updates, and seamless integration with popular streaming platforms like Netflix, Apple TV+, and Disney+.

As Sky focuses on internet-delivered television and enhanced streaming experiences, Sky Glass and Sky Stream remain pivotal to the company’s strategy, ensuring a more streamlined and modern viewing experience for its customers.
