The Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) has addressed the composition of the audience at the Saudi Arabia Darts Masters following comments by Nathan Aspinall suggesting that not all attendees were there voluntarily. The tournament kicked off with notable players like Luke Littler, Michael van Gerwen, and Luke Humphries in action, alongside Aspinall.
After securing a victory against Lourence Ilagan, Aspinall shared his perspective on the event’s ambiance, noting a unique experience and implying that some spectators may not have been fully engaged. However, he acknowledged the starting point for such events, expressing hope for positive feedback from fans and the local media.
In response to Aspinall’s remarks, the PDC clarified that all individuals present were enthusiastic spectators, emphasizing that it was a novel darts event for many attendees in the region. The organization highlighted the varying atmosphere and audience dynamics compared to established darts events in the UK and Europe, emphasizing the positive interest in the PDC’s debut in Saudi Arabia.
Apart from Aspinall’s observations, reigning world champion Luke Littler also commented on the comparatively subdued atmosphere, stating that it differed from his usual experiences. Littler, after defeating Paul Lim, mentioned the need for more crowd noise to match his expectations, acknowledging the unique setting of the tournament.
