Donald Trump has attributed the posting of a racist video on his social media account, featuring former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle depicted as apes, to an error made by a staff member. However, a quick search online reveals numerous racially offensive statements made by Trump on record.
The recent controversy was followed by Trump criticizing Bad Bunny’s performance at the Super Bowl, condemning singing in Spanish as an insult to American greatness and claiming that no one understands the artist’s words.
Trump’s past actions, including the Muslim travel ban and derogatory remarks about Mexican immigrants, showcased his true colors during his first term. His rhetoric continued this time around, as he referred to undocumented immigrants as “poisoning the blood of our country” and vowed to carry out massive deportation operations.
The mainstream news media, both in the US and the UK, largely overlooked or downplayed Trump’s inflammatory and racist language, contributing to the normalization of hate in society.
For instance, Trump’s discriminatory comments about Somali immigrants in December went largely unnoticed in the UK, indicating a desensitization to such behavior. The media’s failure to address and condemn such instances has facilitated the acceptance of divisive rhetoric.
The tolerance of apologists and the reluctance to confront racism have perpetuated the normalization of discriminatory language. While some media outlets express outrage over Trump’s remarks, they also provide platforms for far-right voices, albeit in a more subtle manner.
The intersection of sports and politics highlights the impact of government policies on societal attitudes. Athletes like LeBron James, Megan Rapinoe, and Colin Kaepernick have used their platforms to address issues of racism, sexism, and social injustice, challenging the notion that sports and politics should remain separate.
The reposting of a racially charged video by the US President not only targets prominent Black figures like the Obamas but also perpetuates racism against the broader Black community. Such actions have real-world consequences, fueling discrimination and attacks on people of color in various settings.
The issue of racism transcends geographical boundaries and must be confronted globally to combat systemic discrimination and promote equality for all individuals.
