Brooke Henderson, the defending champion from Smiths Falls, Ontario, is in contention at the CPKC Women’s Open in Edmonton. Henderson, aiming for her third victory in Canada’s LPGA event, carded a 68 in the second round on Friday, placing her at 5-under par. She currently trails the South Korean leader, Soo Bin Joo, by four strokes at 9 under at Royal Mayfair Golf Club in Edmonton, with two rounds remaining.
Henderson was at 7 under before encountering two back-nine bogeys, with one tee shot hitting a spectator. She promptly apologized to the individual and offered a golf ball as a gesture. Meanwhile, Calgary’s Aphrodite Deng, last year’s low amateur in Mississauga, concluded her round with consecutive birdies, posting a 67 to reach 3 under.
The tournament requires the top 65 players and ties to make the cut for the $2.75 million US event. Canadian teenagers Anna Huang from Vancouver and Michelle Xing from Richmond Hill, Ontario, who started the day three shots behind the lead at 5 under, had afternoon tee times.
