Search teams have located the body of Mallory Geis, an American climber who was part of a 10-member international mountaineering team that perished in an avalanche on Broad Peak several weeks ago. The discovery was made by local volunteers, confirmed by Irfan Arshad Khan, president of the Alpine Club of Pakistan. This expedition marked Geis’s inaugural endeavor to ascend an 8,000-meter peak in Pakistan.
Hailing from San Antonio, Texas, Geis had recently announced on social media her decision to close her Pilates studio and embark on a new adventure filled with uncertainties, expressing her anticipation for the challenges ahead. Her family described her as a radiant presence cherished deeply by her loved ones and friends.
The search operation commenced on July 31 following the tragic incident on Broad Peak involving the team led by renowned climber Nirmal Purja. Notably, Purja, also known as Nims Dai, accomplished the remarkable feat of scaling the world’s 14 highest peaks in a record-breaking 189 days in 2019, a journey showcased in the Netflix documentary “14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.” Regrettably, accidents like the avalanche that befell the team are not uncommon in the mountainous terrains of northern Pakistan due to various hazards such as avalanches, falling ice and rocks, extreme altitudes, and unpredictable weather conditions.
