Top-ranked tennis player Jannik Sinner has announced his withdrawal from the upcoming U.S. Open due to a lingering right knee injury sustained after his Wimbledon victory. Despite claiming back-to-back titles at the All England Club, Sinner was forced to skip the hard-court events in Montreal and Cincinnati to prepare for the U.S. Open, which commences on August 30.
In a statement released on Friday, the 25-year-old Italian expressed his disappointment at not being able to compete at this year’s U.S. Open. Sinner revealed that despite intensive rehabilitation efforts with his team and medical staff in Monte Carlo, he requires more time to fully recover from his knee issue.
Having clinched the U.S. Open title in 2024 and finishing as the runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz in the previous year’s final, Sinner’s absence opens the door for Alcaraz’s return to competitive action following a hiatus due to a right wrist injury. The ongoing rivalry between Sinner and Alcaraz, who have faced off in the last three Grand Slam finals, including Alcaraz’s recent victory over Sinner at the U.S. Open, has captivated the tennis world.
Despite his remarkable performance this year with a record of 44-3 and six titles, including a triumph at Wimbledon, Sinner faced a setback at the French Open where he suffered a dramatic defeat.
