Russian airstrikes resulted in the deaths of 12 individuals and the injury of multiple others in Kyiv and the nearby region early on Tuesday, marking the sixth consecutive day of attacks on the Ukrainian capital. Since 2022, Russia has been engaged in a full-scale invasion of Ukraine and has intensified its air assaults in recent months as its advancements on the battlefield have slowed notably.
Kyiv and its vicinity have been incessantly targeted by swarms of drones over the past five days, causing casualties, property damage, and disruptions to daily life. The drones, many of which are upgraded with jet engines, pose a challenge for interception. The continuous air raids have led to lengthy air-raid alerts, disrupting the routines of millions of residents.
More explosions were reported in Kyiv on Tuesday morning, according to a witness from Reuters. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha, highlighted that Russian drones and ballistic missiles struck residential areas and railway infrastructure in the extensive overnight attacks.
Sybiha urged Ukraine’s allies to apply greater economic pressure on Russia and explore the possibility of utilizing Russia’s frozen assets abroad to support Ukraine’s war efforts. He emphasized the urgent need for additional air defense systems for Ukraine, particularly the U.S.-made Patriot interceptors, which are running low.
The casualties in Kyiv included eight fatalities and multiple fires across the city, as confirmed by emergency services via the Telegram messaging app. In a separate incident, Russian ballistic missile strikes on a railway depot and related facilities resulted in the deaths of six employees from Ukrzaliznytsia, the state rail group.
In Boryspil, located outside Kyiv, a residential building and other sites were targeted, resulting in four fatalities and 13 injuries, as reported by Governor Tymur Tkachenko on Telegram. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy disclosed that an Indian national was among those killed in the overnight attacks, which involved a substantial number of jet-powered drones and ballistic missiles.
Ukraine’s air force successfully intercepted five ballistic missiles and recently acquired a limited supply of Patriot interceptors. The Russian strikes extended to the Black Sea region of Odesa, targeting a border crossing with NATO-member Romania and disrupting Ukraine’s agricultural exports, subsequently impacting global food prices.
Estonia’s defense forces revealed that drones involved in a Ukrainian strike against Russia briefly breached Estonian airspace, underscoring the importance of bolstering Ukraine’s air defense capabilities. The ongoing conflict has also prompted Ukraine to retaliate by targeting Russian oil facilities and logistics infrastructure.
Local officials reported a fire in the port area of Ust-Luga and damage to civilian facilities in the Samara region due to air attacks. In eastern Ukraine’s Russian-controlled part of Luhansk region, Ukrainian drone strikes resulted in casualties, as confirmed by the region’s governor, Leonid Pasechnik. Additionally, a civilian fatality occurred in an attack on Russia’s Belgorod region near the Ukrainian border.
Peace negotiations led by the U.S. have stalled, with Ukraine rejecting Russian territorial demands. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy highlighted a positive discussion with U.S. envoys and expressed efforts to finalize a visit to Ukraine. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed the necessity of ending the conflict for the greater good of humanity during a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who expressed a commitment to progress in resolving the situation.
