President Donald Trump has reportedly asked Apple to rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America” on its maps, as part of a renaming initiative causing tensions with Canada. U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum mentioned that Trump directly contacted Apple regarding this change, hinting at a potential update to reflect “Lake America” in the near future.
Following Trump’s executive order to rename Lake Ontario, which coincided with trade disputes and tariffs between the U.S. and Canada, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed opposition to the renaming. Despite Google Maps showing “Lake America” for U.S. users, several Canadian websites inadvertently displayed this change due to third-party data sources.
While Google confirmed the name change in the U.S., Canadian users will still see Lake Ontario on Google Maps. Some Ontario and Canadian websites briefly showed “Lake America,” but have since reverted to displaying Lake Ontario. Apple Maps, at the time of inquiry, still identified the body of water as Lake Ontario.
This move parallels a previous executive order by Trump renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America in 2025, impacting federal documents and select map services. Apple Maps currently acknowledges this area as the “Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America).” Apple has not provided comments on Trump’s request to rename Lake Ontario or any plans for altering their map labeling.
