Greer expressed that the negotiations appeared positive and amicable in nature.
After the meeting, Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc stated his commitment to fulfilling the expectations of Canadians. He did not specify the exact number of future meetings with Greer, emphasizing that they will continue discussions as necessary.
LeBlanc is scheduled to provide an update on the negotiations to the federal government’s Advisory Committee on Canada-U.S. Economic Relations. This committee serves as a platform for members to strategize on Canada’s economic ties with the U.S.
During this week’s second meeting between Canadian and American trade officials, discussions intensified following Trump’s threat to impose significant duties on numerous Canadian goods in addition to existing tariffs. The two sides have been actively engaging in talks to reach a resolution before the impending tariff deadline.
Efforts are underway to present Trump with a potential trade deal proposal as early as Monday. However, disagreements persist on certain aspects, including the level of sectoral tariff reductions and access to Canadian critical minerals. The Canadian side remains firm on its stance that continued negotiations would be challenging if the tariffs come into effect.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford expressed willingness to reintroduce U.S. alcohol on provincial shelves upon achieving a fair deal that safeguards various sectors. Ford highlighted that tariffs on Canada ultimately impact the American populace. Quebec’s stance on alcohol bans aligns with Ontario’s, emphasizing the need for a fair agreement before any changes are made.
