In the United Kingdom, the traditional copper landline telephone networks are being phased out in favor of digital voice services by January 2027. This transition means that households will rely on broadband for making phone calls instead of the old copper-wire network.

The move towards digital voice services is a significant shift in UK communications and is being hastened by BT’s Openreach network through its “Stop Sell” initiative. This program prohibits providers like BT, Sky, Plusnet, and TalkTalk from offering new copper-based broadband and phone services in affected areas.

The implementation of Stop Sell notifications has already been underway in various parts of the UK, with Openreach planning further expansions that will impact around 1.69 million premises across 238 exchange locations. Customers upgrading or switching services will need to transition to full fiber broadband and digital phone services once the changes take effect.

Openreach’s Managed Customer Migrations Director, James Lilley, emphasized the importance of the Stop Sell program in advancing the UK’s shift to modern full fiber technologies. The ultimate goal is to migrate customers to faster and more reliable digital infrastructure, reducing the complexities and costs associated with maintaining both old and new networks.

By early June, the Stop Sell rules will be enforced in 1,432 exchanges nationwide, affecting approximately 14.2 million properties. The nationwide shutdown of the legacy copper-based Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) is less than eight months away, further emphasizing the need for this transition.

Digital Voice, the next-generation home phone service by BT, offers modern features like Multi Call and three-way calling for conference calls, all connected via broadband technology. Upgrading to Digital Voice should not disrupt how households use their phones, as the service is bundled with broadband at no extra cost.

For a seamless transition to the new digital era of communication, households are encouraged to adopt Digital Voice services and embrace the benefits of enhanced call quality and advanced features.
