In a recent discussion on LBC Radio, Rachel Johnson addressed the report by judge Baroness Heather Hallett, criticizing the UK’s response as delayed and insufficient. Johnson highlighted the extensive nature of the report, spanning 800 pages and costing £200 million, leading to the conclusion that Boris Johnson’s delayed lockdown decision resulted in 23,000 deaths, based on data from Professor Neil Ferguson.

The report outlined a chaotic and toxic environment within the government during the pandemic response, impacting decision-making and advice quality. It pointed out the failure to address rule-breaking promptly, leading to public disregard for lockdown measures. Baroness Hallett emphasized the need for urgent prime ministerial leadership in response to the emergency situation.

Additionally, the report stated that government officials had been warned of a worst-case scenario where 80% of the population could be infected, but failed to grasp the increasing likelihood of this outcome. In reaction to the report, Rachel Johnson dismissed the conclusions as overly critical and lacking foresight, defending her brother against the harsh judgments.

Criticism was also directed at Boris Johnson for his perceived optimism and failure to recognize the urgency of the situation. Despite the report’s findings, Rachel Johnson maintained her stance against lockdown measures, labeling them as ineffective and the worst policy decision since World War II. She advocated for protecting vulnerable groups instead of implementing broad lockdowns, arguing that such measures were unnecessary and detrimental to the economy and society.
