Former prominent figure in the MAGA movement, Marjorie Taylor Greene, has declared her intention to resign from her position as a member of the US House of Representatives in January. In a video exceeding 10 minutes in length that she posted online, Greene cited her desire to spare her congressional district from a divisive primary challenge against her by the ex-president they had collectively supported. Known for her fervent support of Donald Trump and her propagation of conspiracy theories, Greene also gained notoriety in the UK for a contentious exchange with journalist Emily Maitlis regarding her claims about “Jewish Space Lasers” causing wildfires in California.

The decision to step down came after a public falling-out between Greene and Trump, during which she openly criticized him on various issues, including his handling of the Epstein files, foreign policy, and healthcare. Trump, in turn, labeled her a “traitor” and “wacky,” pledging to back an alternative candidate against her in the upcoming re-election bid. Greene specified that her resignation would be effective as of January 5, 2026.

Responding to Greene’s announcement, Trump took to Truth Social early in the morning to taunt her, emphasizing her declining poll numbers and reluctance to face a primary challenge strongly supported by him. He also blamed her association with Representative Tom Massie of Kentucky for her downfall, accusing her of turning against him after he ignored her persistent phone calls. Despite the rift, Trump acknowledged Greene’s service and expressed gratitude toward her.

Greene’s departure from the Trump camp marked a significant fracture in his support base, particularly among his staunchest followers. By choosing to bow out in the face of Trump’s opposition, Greene aligned herself with a pattern seen in other moderate establishment Republicans who had clashed with the former president before her.

In her resignation video, filmed in her home with a cross necklace adorning her neck and seasonal decorations in the background, Greene affirmed her contentment and unwavering beliefs, asserting that her self-worth is derived from faith rather than from any individual.
