Manchester City has been found guilty of almost all of the unprecedented 115 charges of financial misconduct it faced, the Premier League confirmed on Tuesday, in one of the most significant controversies in English football history. The club, which has been the dominant force in English football for the past 15 years and currently leads the Premier League, now faces potentially severe penalties that could include a substantial points deduction or even expulsion from the prestigious soccer league, causing significant harm to its Abu Dhabi ownership’s reputation.

An independent commission’s explosive verdict, reported by various British media outlets on Friday, reveals that Manchester City “systematically violated Premier League regulations over nearly a decade,” as stated by Premier League chief executive Richard Masters. The case, initiated by the competition over three years ago and stemming from leaked club communications in 2018, sheds light on the club’s alleged financial misconduct.

Manchester City has responded by expressing its disappointment and surprise at the commission’s ruling, asserting its innocence and stating it will vigorously pursue avenues for appeal. The club was accused of multiple financial infractions between 2009-2018, a period when it transitioned from Manchester United’s shadow to a global powerhouse, achieving remarkable success in both domestic and European competitions.

The violations include providing inaccurate financial information, inflating sponsorship deals from Abu Dhabi, concealing payments supplementing salaries, and violating financial regulations set by both the Premier League and UEFA. Additionally, Manchester City faced charges of non-cooperation with the investigation from 2018-2023.

The Premier League stated that Manchester City engaged in deceptive practices with commercial partners through “sham” contracts, artificially inflating revenues and reducing costs. These actions allegedly misled auditors and regulators about the club’s true financial state, with the aim of complying with financial regulations through misrepresented accounts.

The findings suggest that Manchester City’s rise to prominence, fueled by significant investments and star-studded squads, may have involved circumventing financial rules. The Premier League indicated that sanctions will be determined in a separate hearing by the independent commission.

The verdict is expected to have far-reaching consequences, potentially prompting legal action from rival clubs seeking compensation for the impact of Manchester City’s actions. The future of key players like Erling Haaland and Rayan Cherki, as well as the ownership of Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, could also be in question. The club, owned by the Abu Dhabi royal family since 2008, may face further legal challenges as it seeks to prove its innocence through the appeal process.
