Latvian officials scheduled discussions to establish a new government after a recent parliamentary election, where Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs’s four-party coalition, known for its pro-Ukraine stance, secured 35 percent of the votes. A political crisis in May, triggered by issues surrounding drones possibly originating from Ukraine, led to the collapse of the previous governing coalition. Subsequently, Kulbergs, representing the centrist United List party, obtained approval from the parliament, or Saeima, to lead the new coalition after being in opposition.

Latvia, along with neighboring countries Lithuania and Estonia, stands firmly in support of Ukraine against Russia’s invasion, given its proximity to both Russia and Belarus, which is aligned with Moscow. The election turnout exceeded 51 percent, with over 1.56 million eligible voters in the nation of over 1.8 million participating to elect the 100 members of the Saeima for a four-year term. The United List party is projected to secure 42 parliamentary seats, necessitating a multi-party coalition to navigate the fractured political landscape. Parties are required to garner at least five percent of the vote to secure seats in parliament.

With concerns mounting about potential Russian aggression on NATO’s eastern border, the election outcome reflects Latvia’s strategic position and its commitment to supporting Ukraine amidst regional tensions.
