A vast airport with a history tied to the Nazis has undergone a remarkable transformation, now bearing no resemblance to its former self. Tempelhof Airport, initially constructed in the 1920s in Berlin, was later modified in the 1930s as a display of the Third Reich’s might. The immense terminal, shaped like a crescent, remains one of the world’s largest single-roof structures, stretching an impressive 1.2 kilometers.

Following World War II, Tempelhof Airport symbolized hope, acting as a vital lifeline during the Berlin Airlift when the Soviet Union attempted to coerce Western Allies to relinquish control of the city. By 2008, the airport ceased operations, culminating in its official closure on October 30. In the subsequent years, the 380-hectare airfield was transformed into Tempelhofer Feld, Berlin’s largest inner-city park, surprising many with its new identity.

Today, the park attracts Berliners seeking leisure activities such as picnicking, kite flying, cycling, and sunbathing across its expansive 750 acres of open fields. The historic terminal building now serves as a venue for large events, trade fairs, and concerts, injecting vitality into the colossal structure while preserving its iconic design elements.

Within the park, various initiatives thrive, including protected natural zones, rare plant species, and urban gardening projects, fostering a vibrant community spirit. Boasting 10 entrances across three neighborhoods in southern Berlin, the park spans an area twice the size of Monaco, offering diverse recreational opportunities. Visitors can explore a six-kilometer loop tracing the former runways, repurposed for activities like cycling, skating, and jogging, providing a unique urban experience.

Recently, actress Glenn Close filmed scenes for the upcoming Hunger Games prequel at the former airport, adding to the site’s cinematic legacy. Tempelhof Airport continues to captivate visitors with its blend of history, recreation, and cultural significance, embodying a dynamic transformation from its wartime origins to a beloved urban oasis.
