A British woman named Victoria Bond was one of the five tourists who tragically lost their lives in a severe snowstorm with winds reaching 120mph at Torres del Paine nature reserve in Chile. Victoria, a PR professional from Cornwall, had embarked on a Patagonia trek with her group, which unfortunately ended in a deadly blizzard. Alongside Victoria, two Germans and two Mexicans also perished in the disaster, which took place in a popular area known for its stunning granite peaks and natural beauty.
The group of travelers encountered heavy rainfall and extremely strong winds during the snowstorm, which was comparable to a Category 3 hurricane. Following the incident, more than 20 individuals participated in the search for the victims. Reports indicated that the five individuals, including Victoria, were part of a larger group of nine individuals who went missing during the extreme weather conditions. José Antonio Ruiz, the presidential delegate of Magallanes, confirmed the tragic deaths of the five travelers, mentioning that they got disoriented near the Los Perros camp in the park, a location several hours away from the closest point accessible by vehicle.
The distress call was initiated when an American visitor, Arab Ginnett, posted a plea for help on a Facebook group dedicated to Torres del Paine, Chile. The message detailed the dire situation at the Los Perros camp due to the severe weather conditions, with individuals still missing and in need of rescue. The urgency of the situation was emphasized, highlighting the risks faced by climbers and rescuers in the harsh conditions.
Victoria’s final social media posts showcased videos from her trek, illustrating her adventurous spirit and love for travel. Her online presence indicated a well-traveled individual, with recent trips to destinations like Athens, Barbados, and Costa Rica. The community mourned the loss of the victims, with Chilean President Gabriel Boric extending heartfelt condolences to the families and friends affected by the tragedy.
The two Mexican victims were identified as Cristina Calvillo Tovar and Julian Garcia Pimentel, while the two German victims were named as Nadine Lichey and Andreas Von Pein.
