Joe Cullen has taken to social media to criticize Mensur Suljovic, accusing the experienced darts player of being dishonest. Cullen, from Bradford, faced a disappointing loss to the Austrian during a tense second-round match at the World Darts Championship.
Suljovic made an impressive comeback after falling behind in the game, ultimately clinching a 3-1 victory over Cullen at Alexandra Palace. Throughout the match, Cullen expressed frustration by glancing at his watch sarcastically and muttering “hurry up” to himself while the 53-year-old Suljovic took his time preparing to throw.
Although Suljovic is known for his slower pace compared to other players, Cullen, also known as ‘the Rockstar,’ grew increasingly annoyed by his opponent’s deliberate speed and prolonged celebrations. Tensions escalated during their post-match handshake, with Cullen exchanging heated words with Suljovic, who responded by laughing it off.
As Cullen exited the stage, he halted, turned back, and gave Suljovic a cold stare as the Austrian enjoyed the crowd’s applause. Cullen did not hold back in his angry social media outburst, stating, “If that’s darts, I don’t want any part of it! Always liked Mensur away from the board, but that behavior was evident to everyone.”
He added, “I believe many others share my sentiment. While some may argue it’s customary in the sport, no matter how you phrase it, it’s deceptive! That’s not how darts should be played.”
When questioned about Cullen’s reaction and whether he had apologized for his slow play during a post-match interview, Suljovic seemed puzzled. He responded, “I have never personally apologized to Joe Cullen. I play my game on that stage, so what’s his issue?”
Suljovic further explained, “I might apologize to the referee, but to Joe Cullen? Never. Everyone has their own style of play. I take around 40 seconds before my first dart. Some players (gesturing throwing motion) and my head (gesturing as if dodging a dart). This is not acceptable.”
Pressed for more comments on the incident, Suljovic said, “I don’t understand his concern. What is the issue? I gave him chances with missed doubles and everything.”
Looking ahead, Suljovic could potentially face defending world champion Luke Littler in the next round. Littler, an 18-year-old player, is set to compete against NHS area manager David Davies in his upcoming match.
The PDC World Darts Championship commences on December 11, and fans can catch all the action live exclusively on Sky’s Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle.
