Emissions from Birla Carbon, a manufacturing company, have been identified as a significant contributor to the soot that fell on neighborhoods in Hamilton last month, according to Ontario’s Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP). The issue of black dust settling over Hamilton communities has been a long-standing concern, especially in the vicinity of the eastern industrial area. However, residents and local officials noted that the soot fallout in early July was unusually heavy and affected areas not typically impacted.

The excessive soot deposition, which covered homes and even made its way onto pets and children, prompted numerous residents to call on their elected representatives to address the problem. In response, ministry spokesperson Lindsay Davidson informed CBC Hamilton that Birla has been referred for a formal investigation by the ministry’s environmental investigations and enforcement branch for potential violations of environmental laws in Ontario.

Birla Carbon stated that it is fully cooperating with the ministry’s inquiries. When asked about the cause of the emissions and their nature, company spokesperson Roysten Dmello did not provide specific answers but mentioned that they had not received any official communication or report from the MECP regarding the findings. Birla Carbon operates its sole Canadian factory on Parkdale Avenue N. and is active in 14 countries, specializing in the production of carbon black, a fine black powder utilized in various manufacturing processes involving rubber and plastic.

The ministry has shared its analysis and sampling data with Hamilton Public Health, as confirmed by Davidson. The authorities intend to compel Birla Carbon to take necessary measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. Hamilton’s public health officials are currently reviewing the ministry’s findings and consulting with toxicology experts to assess any potential health risks associated with the recent soot exposure.

While the specific contents of the July emissions linked to Birla Carbon have not been disclosed, a proposed government standard for the carbon black sector highlights the significant contribution of Ontario’s carbon black facilities to sulphur dioxide emissions, particularly in Hamilton and Sarnia. Short-term exposure to sulphur dioxide is known to cause respiratory issues and can have adverse effects on the heart, potentially leading to hospitalization or even premature death. The emissions are also associated with negative health impacts on the respiratory and cardiovascular systems.

Councillor Tom Jackson reported receiving numerous complaints about soot from residents in his Ward 6, with many suspecting Birla Carbon as the source. He urged company officials to engage with affected residents and expressed his desire for substantial fines to be imposed on the company. Jackson emphasized the importance of industrial accountability and called for businesses to take more responsibility in preventing incidents like the recent soot fallout in Hamilton.

In a separate development, McMaster University researchers conducted a study sampling soot from 50 homes in Hamilton in 2024 and 2025. Their findings revealed the presence of toxic chemicals consistent with coal combustion, with higher concentrations of dust and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) detected near the industrial area in northeast Hamilton. The study indicated that coal combustion plays a significant role in producing the identified PAHs, although other potential sources contributing to the soot fallout could not be ruled out. Further investigation and analysis are needed to pinpoint the exact sources of the pollutants.
