Frustrated residents evacuated from Summerland, B.C., are turning to unconventional channels for updates on their community as official information remains scarce, despite warnings about misinformation. Some have resorted to viewing online posts from individuals who stayed in the evacuated area, such as an e-bike rider navigating through the deserted but seemingly untouched streets.
Kerry Gold, a local resident, expressed gratitude for the e-bike rider’s videos, even though she discouraged people from risking their safety by staying behind. She mentioned that seeing images of the streets gave her a sense of relief amid uncertainty about the fate of her own home.
Erick Thompson, the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen’s senior communications manager, acknowledged the evacuees’ frustrations and expressed a desire to provide residents with a firsthand look at Summerland’s downtown area.
The provincial government confirmed significant property damage from the Bald Range fire, with numerous homes destroyed and most of Faulder reduced to ashes. However, official damage assessments have been delayed due to hazardous conditions.
Authorities have cautioned against spreading false information on social media, emphasizing the need to rely on verified sources for updates. The City of Penticton advised residents to stay informed through official channels, as conditions in the area could change rapidly.
