Argos is offering a popular alternative to Sky Q for homes seeking a similar upgrade without monthly fees. The Manhattan S4-R set-top box, released recently, provides features like recording programs, pausing live TV, and storing content on its internal hard drive, akin to Sky’s premium service.

The standout feature of the Manhattan S4-R is its cost-effectiveness. Unlike Sky Q, which entails monthly payments, the Manhattan S4-R grants access to over 100 channels with no ongoing fees after the initial purchase. This is made possible through Freesat, utilizing an existing satellite dish for delivering free TV channels, including BBC, ITV1, Channel 4, E4, and more.

With a user-friendly interface and search functionalities, the Manhattan S4-R offers access to a vast library of on-demand content and supports various apps like BBC iPlayer and ITVX. While it may not match Sky Q in premium sports and movie packages, Freesat’s appeal lies in its free viewing experience.

Priced at £219.99, the Manhattan S4-R 500GB model is currently available at retailers like Argos and Amazon, with larger 1TB and 2TB versions set to launch soon. The device has garnered high demand, as indicated by Argos labeling it as “in demand” and “selling fast.”

According to Manhattan’s COO, Alex Arbab-Zadeh, the S4-R aims to provide a subscription-free experience akin to their T4-R Freeview recorder for Freesat users. Offering enhanced recording capabilities, the S4-R allows up to four simultaneous recordings, a significant improvement over its predecessor’s two-channel limit.

Another disruptor in the TV market is the Pleio puck, which offers freely streaming access to over 50 live channels without the need for an aerial. Retailing at £99.99, the Pleio puck is back in stock and includes a gaming controller along with access to 200 online games.

Sky has also announced a 20% price reduction for the upcoming World Cup, with prices for the Sky Glass Air TV starting from £4.50 per month. Customers interested in the Sky Glass Gen 2 model, featuring a 4K Quantum Dot display and built-in Dolby Atmos soundbar, can expect to pay from £11 per month.
