A male individual has been formally accused in connection with a brutal knife assault that resulted in the death of a mother of four and caused injuries to her spouse.

The accused, a man in his twenties, allegedly targeted Stella and Brian Gallagher in Cork, Ireland. Tragically, Stella lost her life during the attack, while her husband Brian is currently hospitalized. Law enforcement authorities have disclosed that a man apprehended at the crime scene has been charged in relation to the incident and is set to appear in Cork City District Court later today.

The victims, who are parents to daughter Ciara and sons David, Conor, and Matthew, are at the center of an ongoing investigation into the tragic occurrence. A thorough forensic examination of the premises has been carried out. A spokesperson for the Garda confirmed, “Gardaí probing the fatal incident in Ballinlough on Monday night, November 17, 2025, have pressed charges against the male suspect in his twenties who was detained at the scene. He is scheduled to face the Cork City District Court this afternoon, Wednesday, November 19, 2025.”

Authorities responded to the residence on the city’s south side just after 9 p.m. on Monday, with Armed Support Units dispatched to the location. Residents informed CorkBeo of hearing distressing screams from outside the typically tranquil estate, prompting immediate calls to emergency services.

Mrs. Gallagher was employed as a chemical engineer at a pharmaceutical firm. A family liaison officer has been assigned to assist the deceased’s relatives, and an incident room has been established at Angelsea Street Garda Station under the supervision of a senior investigating officer.

Local councilor Peter Horgan expressed how the incident has deeply affected the community. He stated, “It’s a dreadful tragedy, and my thoughts are with the victims and their extended family. The authorities have commenced their investigation and must be granted the necessary space, but the incident has cast a somber shadow over the entire community; it’s truly a heartbreaking situation.”

“We urge any witnesses to step forward regarding this incident. Anyone who was in the Shrewsbury Downs vicinity of Ballinlough between 8:30 pm and 9:30 pm on Monday, November 17, 2025, and possesses camera footage (including home security and dash-cam footage) is urged to provide this material to the investigating Gardaí. For any information, individuals are encouraged to contact Anglesea Street Garda Station at 021 452 2000, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.”
