An apartment building in Gaza City was struck by an Israeli airstrike early on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of five Palestinians, including four women, according to health and civil defence service officials. The attack caused the building to collapse and sparked a fire.
Ahmed Al-Dahdouh, an eyewitness, described the chaotic scene as he and others rushed to rescue survivors from the rubble, including women, men, and children. Among the casualties were a Christian mother and her daughter.
The incident occurred amid ongoing tensions between Israel and Hamas, with Israel accusing Hamas of violating the ceasefire by rearming and launching attacks. Efforts to implement a comprehensive peace agreement, including Hamas disarmament and Israeli troop withdrawal, have seen limited progress.
Gaza health officials reported a death toll of at least 1,400 Palestinians from Israeli actions since the ceasefire last October, while Israel claimed the loss of four soldiers to Gaza militants during the same period. The conflict, which began on October 7, 2023, escalated when Hamas-led militants launched an invasion of Israel, resulting in casualties and hostages.
Hamas has denied allegations of aggression and weapon rearmament, placing blame on Israel for disrupting peace efforts in Gaza. The situation remains tense as both sides continue to exchange accusations and engage in military actions.
