Officials have broadened evacuation directives linked to the largest wildfire in British Columbia. Over the weekend, the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District expanded an evacuation order for an area south of the Pear Lake wildfire, encompassing properties near Highway 99 in the Marble Canyon zone. Similarly, the Thompson-Nicola Regional District extended an evacuation order along Highway 99, to the west of the Highway 97 junction. These extensions now include nearly 200 properties in total.

Additionally, the Ts’kw’aylaxw First Nation has issued evacuation orders for several reserves. The evacuation orders were necessitated by the ongoing wildfires in the region. Evacuation alerts have also been extended by the respective governments.

The Pear Lake wildfire has ravaged an area exceeding 1,647 square kilometers, as reported by the B.C. Wildfire Service. The blaze has resulted in the destruction of structures on over 120 properties, primarily concentrated around Clinton. Presently, the fire is most active along its western and southern boundaries.

In other news, Environment Canada has issued a yellow severe thunderstorm watch covering a significant portion of the B.C. Interior, Cariboo, and Metro Vancouver regions. Severe thunderstorm warnings have been specifically issued for parts of Vancouver Island. The potential for dry lightning strikes and high winds in the southern and central Interior raises concerns for heightened fire activity.

Meanwhile, a new wildfire, sparked by lightning, emerged south of Kamloops in the Jacko Lake area. By Saturday evening, the fire had expanded to 44 hectares and was under control, with containment efforts in progress. The B.C. Wildfire Service has mobilized personnel and air crews to manage the situation effectively.

As of the latest update, British Columbia is grappling with more than 150 active wildfires, with close to 60 of them categorized as out of control. The provincial state of emergency related to wildfires has been extended by the B.C. government until at least Aug. 29.
