Twitch users should be aware of a recent development by Amazon, the parent company of Twitch, where they are utilizing content from Twitch to train artificial intelligence (AI) models. This move has sparked strong opposition from streamers and users on the interactive livestreaming platform. While users’ accounts are automatically included, Amazon has stated that individuals can opt out and disable this default setting, a decision that many have made due to concerns about Amazon using their creative content without proper authorization.

In response to the backlash, one user expressed surprise at the existence of an opt-out toggle, while another user mentioned turning it off based on principle, despite not being an active streamer. The controversy arises amidst a growing rift between AI firms seeking data and content creators advocating for greater control over their content. This practice also aligns with other prominent streaming and gaming platforms like YouTube Live, Netflix, and Roblox, which utilize AI for tasks such as content enhancement, live production support, and recommendations.

Under the new policy, Amazon is authorized to gather streams, clips, images, chats, and channel content for AI training purposes, as confirmed by Twitch. To disable the default setting, users must access their Twitch profile picture, navigate to Settings, and then proceed to Security and Privacy to deactivate the switch for Training for Generative AI.

When questioned about the choice to opt out rather than opt in, Mike Minton, the company’s chief product officer, explained that most users would not willingly agree to opt into data collection if it were not enabled by default. Minton’s live stream comments regarding the default setting further fueled discontent within the Twitch community, with users criticizing the implied lack of popularity and anti-consumer nature of the feature.

Despite reassurances from Twitch that collected data will not be sold, users remain apprehensive about the potential uses of their content. Numerous users voiced their opposition to the new policy during Twitch’s live stream, accusing the company of exploiting creators’ efforts. Twitch has not confirmed whether user content has already been utilized for training purposes.

Overall, this development highlights the ongoing tension between tech companies’ data practices and user expectations regarding content ownership and privacy.
