Over 1,000 jobs are in jeopardy following the collapse of popular accessories chain Claire’s into administration. Approximately 150 stores are facing uncertainty as administrators from Kroll step in to manage the insolvency, occurring just four months after a previous rescue attempt. Despite the situation, Claire’s is expected to continue operating for now.

Recent reports indicated that both Claire’s and The Original Factory Shop (TOFS) were preparing for administration filings. Modella Capital, the owner of Claire’s, confirmed the administration proceedings for both companies. Nicholas Found from Retail Economics had previously cautioned that Claire’s struggles to keep up with online competitors like Temu and TikTok Shop, affecting the fashion accessories market where spontaneous purchases are easily replaceable.

Sean Moran, a restructuring expert at Shakespeare Martineau, highlighted the relentless competition posed by online retailers on traditional high street brands, particularly in the fashion and accessories sector. He anticipated that challenging market conditions could lead to more retailers facing difficulties in the near future.

Helen Dickinson, CEO of the British Retail Consortium (BRC), pointed out the tough retail environment influenced by the rising cost of living, contributing to businesses like Claire’s facing administration. She warned that further governmental policies in 2026 could exacerbate the situation.

Modella emphasized the harsh retail landscape, worsened by government policies, impacting British businesses like Claire’s. RSM UK, an audit and consulting firm, predicted ongoing challenges for the retail industry in 2026, attributing them to fragile consumer confidence and the growing influence of social media personalities and brands.

Jacqui Baker, head of retail at RSM UK, highlighted the increasing significance of social media in retail, especially for product discovery among younger consumers. Despite these challenges, Nicholas Found emphasized that traditional high street brands like Claire’s still hold value but need a strategic reset to stay relevant in today’s market.
