Tragedy struck as a respected church leader lost his life in a fatal accident caused by a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) collision following a tire blowout on the M60 motorway. The incident occurred near Swinton, Salford, where the HGV veered uncontrollably across the lanes and crashed through a central reservation barrier into oncoming traffic. The collision involved an electric BMW id5 driven by David Lalgee, 64, who tragically succumbed to severe injuries despite medical intervention.
Lalgee, a grandfather of nine, heroically shielded his wife from harm by swerving to absorb the impact of the oncoming HGV. His family commended his selfless act, stating that he always prioritized others over himself. The coroner’s report confirmed that the collision was deemed unavoidable due to the tire blowout, with no indication of criminal negligence in driving standards.
Witnesses described the collision as resembling an explosion, as the HGV driven by Tracy Carradice careened out of control. Investigations revealed no mechanical defects in the vehicle prior to the tragic incident. Detective Sergeant Matthew Waggett clarified that the chain of events leading to the collision was solely triggered by the tire failure and subsequent loss of control of the HGV.
Despite the efforts to determine the cause of the tire blowout, the exact reason remains unknown. Carradice, an experienced HGV driver, recounted the harrowing moments leading up to the collision, emphasizing that she had no control over the unforeseen circumstances. Lalgee, a former police officer and pastor at Church Alive in Blackpool, was remembered for his unwavering love and support for others.
The coroner expressed deep sympathy for the family’s loss, acknowledging Lalgee’s significant contributions to society. The medical findings attributed his death to multiple traumatic injuries from the road traffic collision. While the tragic event left many questions unanswered, the community mourns the loss of a beloved figure who dedicated his life to serving others.
