A woman from the UK is facing serious charges for allegedly orchestrating a daring theft of rare wines valued at over £30,000. Natali Ray, residing in Herne Bay, Kent, has been accused of grand larceny, conspiracy to commit grand larceny, and defrauding an innkeeper. During her appearance at the Clark County General District Court in Virginia, she remained silent but nodded in acknowledgment as prosecutor Matthew Bass characterized the incident as a meticulously planned theft.
The mother of three stands accused of attempting to steal fine vintage wines worth £31,500 from the L’Auberge Provencale winery. It is claimed that she engaged the winery staff in conversation to create a distraction while an accomplice made off with the valuable wine bottles. Moreover, on a separate occasion in November, she allegedly posed as an assistant to a wealthy Canadian businesswoman using a false identity, but her actions led to her apprehension at a restaurant.
The specific accusation involves the theft of six bottles of pinot noir from Burgundy’s esteemed Domaine de la Romanée-Conti estate, with an estimated value matching the previously mentioned sum. The limited production of this wine, only 5,000 bottles annually, attracts high prices from enthusiasts. Surveillance footage captured a woman believed to be Ray expressing interest in the wine cellar’s reputation and requesting to speak with sommelier Christian Borel to ensure proper storage conditions.
Christian Borel, co-owner of the establishment, shared that the woman indirectly inquired about French wines and displayed an interest in the wines they carried. While engaging with the woman, Christian noted a subtle noise but dismissed it at the time, later realizing it was likely the accomplice moving the stolen bottles. The encounter ended abruptly as the individuals claimed they were in a hurry, leading to a pursuit resulting in the arrest of Ray but the escape of her companion.
Ray’s defense asserts that she was coerced into the crime by her accomplice, whom she allegedly met on a cruise and forced her participation. Despite her neighbors describing the incident as uncharacteristic of her usual demeanor, Ray is currently detained at the Northwestern Regional Adult Detention Center without the option for bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for February 11, 2026, where Ray will face the possibility of a 50-year prison sentence if convicted of the charges brought against her.
