A young man, aged 25, from Cork has been formally accused of the murder of his mother and the physical assault of his father. David Gallagher, residing in Shrewsbury Downs, Ballinlough, made an appearance at Cork District Court today following an incident involving a stabbing on Monday evening. Authorities and emergency responders were summoned to a residence at Shrewsbury Downs around 9pm on Monday.

Today, Gallagher faced charges for the alleged killing of his mother, Stella Gallagher, aged 59, at their residence on Monday. Additionally, he was charged with causing harm to his father, Brian Gallagher, aged 63, at the same location on the same night.

Stella Gallagher was swiftly taken to Cork University Hospital on Monday night, where she was later pronounced deceased. Described as a chemical engineer who had a long tenure at Eli Lilly in Cork, according to CorkBeo.

Detective Sergeant Niall Hayes from Blackrock Garda Station provided testimony regarding the arrest, charges, and caution procedures. Gallagher reportedly remained unresponsive when the charges were presented to him at 1.27pm today while under caution. He had been held for questioning at Bridewell Garda Station.

Sergeant John Kelleher stated that authorities would be requesting custody remand at Cork District Court on November 26. Notably, bail is typically not granted at the district court level for charges of this severity.

Defense solicitor Shane Collins Daly sought and was granted free legal aid for Gallagher, who is currently unemployed. The solicitor mentioned that Gallagher had been regularly examined by a medical professional every eight hours during custody, with medication administered accordingly.

Mr. Collins Daly further requested urgent medical and psychiatric assessments for Gallagher upon his remand at Cork Prison. Judge John King approved the request, ordering comprehensive medical attention for the defendant during his time in prison.

The judge decided to remand Gallagher in custody for a video-linked appearance at Cork District Court scheduled for November 26.
