A death row convict endured a prolonged and gruesome execution lasting nearly 45 minutes, causing a blood-splattered scene and intense suffering. Clayton Lockett, aged 38, faced the death penalty in April 2018 at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in the United States for his convictions of murder, rape, and kidnapping.
Lockett was involved in the shooting of 19-year-old Stephanie Neiman, who was later buried alive by his accomplices in 1999 after interrupting a robbery. On the day of his execution, medical teams spent over 50 minutes searching for suitable veins before finally locating one in his groin. Reports detailed numerous needle punctures on his arms, legs, and neck during the process.
During the procedure, a doctor accidentally punctured an artery while attempting to insert a line into Lockett’s groin, resulting in blood splatter that affected staff and created a chaotic and bloody environment in the chamber. Following the lethal injection, Lockett did not pass away peacefully, but instead thrashed around, lifted his head and shoulders, and emitted groans. The witness chamber’s blinds were drawn about 16 minutes into the process due to the escalating turmoil, and it took a distressing 43 minutes for Lockett to succumb.
A paramedic present at the scene mentioned the doctor’s unawareness of hitting the artery, leading to a messy situation with blood everywhere. Witnesses, including a local journalist and Lockett’s lawyer, described the execution as botched and horrifying. As a result of the incident, Governor Mary Fallin ordered an independent review and a temporary halt on future executions in Oklahoma to reassess the protocols. This incident sparked a nationwide debate on the use of drugs in executions and raised concerns about training for medical staff and the lack of transparency in execution procedures.
Lockett’s fellow inmate, Charles Warner, was scheduled for execution in the same room shortly after but was postponed until 2015 due to the failed execution attempt. Warner’s lawyer, Madeline Cohen, present at Lockett’s execution, demanded an investigation into the incident, emphasizing the need for transparency regarding the drugs used in executions.
