The House of Commons is set to finalize the Sentencing Bill this week, aiming to address the longstanding crisis in the prison system, exacerbated by years of Tory government shortcomings. The legislation not only aims to rectify past failures but also focuses on enhancing protections for victims.

In a significant move, the government has announced that all victims will now have free access to sentencing remarks from the crown court for the first time. This important change, long advocated for by victims’ groups, exceeds the recommendations outlined in the Gauke review, highlighting the government’s commitment to improving victim rights.

Previously, some victims had to pay substantial amounts to obtain transcripts of sentencing remarks, hindering their access to crucial information. Providing victims with these remarks can be transformative in aiding their journey to recovery, as illustrated by a survivor who found solace and empowerment in the judge’s words following a traumatic trial experience.

The Bill not only benefits victims but also enhances transparency in the justice system. It includes amendments to prioritize the protection of victims in sentencing purposes, introduces a standardized process for recording domestic abuse findings, and establishes provisions for “restriction zones” to safeguard victims.

This comprehensive approach aligns with the government’s broader agenda to combat violence against women and girls, including the deployment of specialist rape units nationwide and significant investments in victim support services and trauma-informed care. By focusing on reducing crime, preventing reoffending, and prioritizing victim protection, the Sentencing Bill reflects the government’s commitment to justice reform and rectifying past challenges in the justice system.
