Reform UK’s senior figure advocates for a decrease in the number of young individuals pursuing higher education, despite his own academic background at a prominent institution in the country. Zia Yusuf, a wealthy individual who previously served as the party’s chairman and now holds the position of head of policy, proposed the closure of certain universities.

Yusuf, who received education at a prestigious private boys’ school and later attended the renowned London School of Economics, highlighted that three of the world’s top universities are situated on isolated islands. Expressing concern over the high levels of student debt in the country, he emphasized the need to reevaluate the current scenario, suggesting a reduction in university attendance and the number of universities.

The businessman, who pursued a career in banking at Merrill Lynch and Goldman Sachs post-graduation, issued a warning to universities regarding potential restrictions on enrolling international students under a future Reform UK administration, despite the significant financial contributions these students make.

Yusuf criticized former Labour Prime Minister Tony Blair for his ambition to have half of young people attend university, while current Labour leader Keir Starmer has shifted focus towards promoting apprenticeships. Speaking at the CBI’s annual conference in London, Yusuf raised questions about the sustainability of the present education system in light of advancements in AI technology, emphasizing the importance of benefiting British society and taxpayers.

His remarks coincide with universities grappling with declining student enrollments and financial constraints, leading to a wave of job cuts across the sector. Additionally, Yusuf’s affiliation with Reform UK leader Nigel Farage and his educational background were discussed, underscoring the party’s efforts to engage with the UK corporate sector.

Amid growing scrutiny, Reform UK faces demands for an inquiry following the sentencing of Nathan Gill, a former party leader in Wales, for accepting bribes related to pro-Russia activities. When questioned by the Mirror about potential apprehensions regarding an investigation, Yusuf distanced himself from Gill’s actions, highlighting the unfairness of tarnishing the party’s reputation based on one individual’s misconduct.
