A prison reform advocate has criticized the disorder within the UK prison system following a string of prisoner escapes, urging for necessary changes. Claire Lewis, who was a victim of a violent attack at Frankland jail in Durham 15 years ago, suffered from severe PTSD and had to retire as a result. Her call for protective body armor for prison officers garnered significant support, leading to the government’s decision to provide frontline staff with the armor earlier this year.

Expressing concern, Claire emphasized the importance of implementing proper systems to prevent the release of dangerous individuals back into society, highlighting the risks of reoffending. Recent incidents at Wandsworth prison, including the mistaken release of offenders like Brahim Kaddour Cherif and Billy Smith, have raised further alarm over the system’s failures.

In a notable case, Daniel Khalife, convicted of spying for Iran, managed to escape in 2023 by hiding under a food delivery truck before being recaptured three days later. Claire stressed the need for thorough procedures and oversight to ensure secure prisoner handovers and deportations.

Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy has assured the public of an exhaustive independent investigation led by Dame Lynne Owens to identify and address the issues within the penal system, with the aim of enhancing safeguards and protecting the public effectively.
