An individual, who had managed to avoid capture by Italian authorities for 16 years, was apprehended upon returning to his country to show support at the Winter Olympics. The man from Slovakia came back to the location of his alleged offenses to root for the ice hockey team.
Despite not making it to the arena, the 44-year-old, whose identity has not been disclosed, was intercepted by police. An arrest warrant had been issued in 2010 concerning a string of thefts he purportedly committed. The Carabinieri police revealed that he has a sentence of 11 months and seven days to serve.
Authorities located him after he checked into a guesthouse on the outskirts of Milan. Despite being on the wanted list, he chose to revisit the country. He had planned to attend the ice hockey event at the Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena, but was taken into custody before the game.
Subsequently, he was taken to the central San Vittore Prison, while Slovakia’s men’s team achieved a surprising victory over Finland with a score of 4-1. Their upcoming matches include one against Italy on Friday and another against Sweden to conclude the preliminary round on Saturday.
Slovakia secured a bronze medal in the previous Winter Olympics in Beijing when NHL players were not participating. This marks their return after the 2014 Sochi Games.
