An investigation has been initiated by the police following an incident where a young child reportedly consumed disinfectant from a bottle mistakenly placed in her McDonald’s Happy Meal. The toddler, a two-year-old girl, was rushed to the hospital after ingesting a pungent liquid that had been unintentionally included in her meal at a drive-thru in Kassel, Germany.

The child’s mother, aged 34, had opted for water as her daughter’s beverage but noticed something was amiss when the child suddenly turned red and began screaming while they were leaving the fast-food establishment. Upon returning to the restaurant to address the issue, the mother contacted the authorities, who mentioned that the child was fortunate not to have sustained severe injuries. Emergency medical services initially attended to the toddler before she was taken to the hospital by her mother.

Authorities suspect that the bottle, which had traces of a cleaning solution from previous use by staff, was mistakenly placed in the packaging of the Happy Meal. The investigation is centered on potential negligence leading to bodily harm, as there is no evidence indicating intentional harm towards the child.

A spokesperson for McDonald’s in Germany stated to the HNA newspaper that the company is fully cooperating with the investigation and expressed sympathy for the incident but refrained from providing further comments. This is not the first instance of an unexpected item being found in a Happy Meal, as in a previous case in October 2023, a mother in the UK discovered a cigarette butt in her child’s meal, prompting her to share her dismay on social media.

Gemma Kirk-Bonner, the concerned mother, found the cigarette butt while feeding her one-year-old son from a fish finger box purchased at a McDonald’s branch in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria. She expressed her frustration at the situation, highlighting the potential danger if her older child had ingested the foreign object unknowingly. McDonald’s advised Ms. Kirk-Bonner to contact customer services for a thorough investigation and resolution of the matter.
