Keir Starmer is set to lead a crucial meeting with allies as Donald Trump suggested a positive development may be underway in Ukraine peace negotiations.

The Prime Minister will chair discussions of the coalition of more than 30 nations dedicated to overseeing any peace agreement on Tuesday. These countries have committed to ensuring Kyiv’s security if a deal is reached with Russian President Vladimir Putin to halt the violent invasion.

Concerns arose over the weekend in Ukraine, the UK, and European capitals following the leak of a 28-point US peace proposal to end the conflict in Ukraine. The plan included significant concessions to Moscow, such as reducing Ukraine’s military forces and abandoning plans to join NATO.

However, after key talks in Geneva on Sunday involving officials from Europe, Ukraine, and the US, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted “tremendous” progress. He highlighted positive steps towards gaining acceptance of the plan by both European and Ukrainian parties.

In addition, the US President hinted at progress, stating on social media that there might be positive developments in the peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. Keir Starmer expressed optimism about the ongoing talks in Geneva, emphasizing the importance of achieving a fair and enduring peace.

Starmer mentioned leading the coalition of willing countries supporting Ukraine and announced plans for a virtual meeting to discuss further progress towards a just and lasting peace. He emphasized the significance of resolving the conflict not only for Ukraine but also for all, including the United Kingdom.

Earlier, the PM’s spokesperson stated that Keir Starmer welcomed the substantial progress made during the Geneva meetings. Despite some remaining issues, both the US and Ukraine are committed to continuing intensive work on the peace plan in the upcoming days and weeks. The Prime Minister is expected to maintain engagement with global leaders throughout the week.
