South Park seems to be taking a cue from Donald Trump by changing its name if it doesn’t like it. The animated satire has revealed a new title for its 29th season — it will now go by South America. This move is a direct jab at the U.S. president’s actions in renaming various geographical locations to include America.
Creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone announced the name change to SOUTH AMERICA, inspired by Apple and Google’s actions. They expressed gratitude to their parent company Paramount for their support. This change carries extra significance due to the show’s parent company, Paramount Skydance, being owned by David Ellison, who denies being a Trump supporter.
Trump’s initiative to rename geographic landmarks began during his second term, with efforts like renaming the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America. Most recently, Lake Ontario was directed to be called Lake America, with tech giants Apple and Google complying on their maps despite criticism.
The South Park rebranding comes shortly after Trump suggested renaming New Mexico to New America. Whether South America is a temporary joke or a running theme for the new season remains to be seen, but it aligns with the show’s satirical approach, especially its mockery of Trump and his presidency.
The Emmy-winning series, which has been on air since 1997, has been a target of criticism from Trump and his supporters for its controversial content. The show’s recent Instagram post took a dig at Trump’s Emmy aspirations while celebrating its own win. Season 29 of South Park, now South America, premieres on Comedy Central on September 16, followed by its Canadian debut on Paramount+ the next day.
