In 1979, John achieved a significant milestone by winning the UK Championship against Terry Griffiths in a closely contested match. Despite facing a penalty for tardiness during the final session, he emerged victorious. Renowned for his charismatic persona, he endeared himself to television audiences as a co-host of the popular 1990s game show Big Break alongside Jim Davidson, where his famous query, “Where’s the cue ball going?” became a trademark. Additionally, his adept commentary skills were showcased while covering snooker events for the BBC.

Shortly after his passing in Mijas Costa, Spain, his wife, Rosie Ries, shared her profound grief with The Mirror, emphasizing their close bond over the 16 years of their marriage. John’s close friend James Malyon, present with Rosie at the time, disclosed the sudden cause of death as “a ruptured aorta.” Overwhelmed by the unexpected tragedy, James highlighted John’s vibrant personality and shared memories of their golf outings and social gatherings in Spain.

As friends and family prepare to commemorate John’s life, gatherings in Mijas Costa and the UK are being planned to honor his memory. James expressed a desire for a delayed funeral in consideration of the grieving process, underscoring the immense impact John had on those around him.

Following a successful professional career in snooker, he transitioned into the entertainment realm, gaining fame and financial success through endeavors like Big Break and various ventures that stemmed from his television appearances.

Esteemed snooker figure Ken Doherty, who shared commentary duties with John, expressed deep sorrow over his demise, reminiscing about their camaraderie and the profound influence John had on his life. Ken lauded John’s storytelling abilities and their shared love for Manchester United, underscoring the void left by his absence in the snooker community.
