Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz are set to team up for the mixed doubles event at the upcoming U.S. Open, forming a formidable partnership. The U.S. Tennis Association recently announced that the duo received a wild card entry into the tournament, where they will compete for a prize pool of $1 million.

This marks Williams’ anticipated return to the U.S. Open after missing out in 2022. Having made a comeback to the sport this summer, the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion is eager to showcase her skills alongside Alcaraz.

While Alcaraz expressed his excitement by posting a message on social media tagging Williams, it is worth noting that Williams will not be participating in the singles competition at the tournament. Instead, American Sofia Kenin, the 2020 Australian Open winner, secured the women’s wild card spot.

Following a knee injury at Wimbledon, Williams teamed up with her sister Venus for doubles at the Cincinnati Open. There is still a possibility that the Williams sisters may join forces once again at the U.S. Open.

In a separate announcement, Alcaraz confirmed his return to defend his U.S. Open singles title after recovering from a right wrist injury that sidelined him since April.

The mixed doubles tournament has evolved over the years, now featuring a revamped format aimed at attracting top singles players. The inclusion of star players like Williams and Alcaraz adds further excitement to the competition.

In light of some player withdrawals, the USTA made several updates to the field. Notably, Jessica Pegula and Taylor Fritz will now pair up, while additional wild cards were awarded to complete the main draw.

The mixed doubles event at the U.S. Open promises to be a thrilling showcase of talent, with a diverse array of pairings vying for victory.
