Lightning strikes illuminated the skies over British Columbia’s South Coast during the night in a rare weather event as a severe thunderstorm passed through the area, causing disruptions at Vancouver International Airport and impacting flight schedules. Meteorologist Johanna Wagstaffe from CBC described the event as a significant system with numerous cloud-to-ground lightning strikes, particularly concentrated in Vancouver and Richmond.

The low-pressure system, laden with moisture after journeying from the equator, made landfall near Richmond, leading to an extraordinary display of lightning. Environment Canada reported over 1,800 lightning strikes in the Lower Mainland over Saturday night and Sunday morning, while the B.C. Wildfire Service documented more than 7,000 lightning strikes across the province.

The intense storm resulted in multiple power outages, affecting over 3,800 customers in the Lower Mainland and Sunshine Coast regions by Sunday morning. Vancouver International Airport experienced disruptions, with numerous flight delays and cancellations between 9 p.m. Saturday and 3 a.m. Sunday, leaving many passengers stranded.

Passenger Simone McCallum shared her experience of being stranded at the airport overnight, highlighting the challenges faced by passengers due to the disruptions. YVR spokesperson Stephen Smart apologized for the inconvenience caused and mentioned the operational challenges posed by the prolonged storm, which brought heavy rainfall and lightning strikes lasting over five hours.

The storm also impacted wildfire response efforts, with the B.C. Wildfire Service recording thousands of lightning strikes in different regions, leading to several wildfires. Despite the rainfall aiding firefighting activities, the risk of new fires remains due to prolonged dry conditions preceding the storm.

As the storm system moved eastward, Environment Canada issued severe thunderstorm watches for southeastern B.C. regions and a high streamflow advisory for various areas in the Central Interior. The heavy rainfall brought by the storm was evident across southern B.C., with significant precipitation recorded in different locations.

The unusual thunderstorm activity in Metro Vancouver amazed residents, with the storm system causing disruptions and highlighting the need for preparedness in the face of extreme weather events. The weather watch continues as authorities monitor the situation and urge caution amid the ongoing impacts of the storm.
