The Royal Air Force (RAF) may need to deploy lasers in response to a Russian spy ship’s dangerous attempt to blind British pilots, according to a leading defense expert. Defence Secretary John Healey recently disclosed that the crew of the Yantar directed lasers at RAF P-8 planes while being monitored near UK waters in Scotland. A Royal Navy frigate is tracking the ship, suspected of surveying crucial subsea cables handling a large portion of the UK’s telecommunications data. Mr. Healey issued a firm warning to the Kremlin, emphasizing the UK’s readiness to respond if the Yantar moves south.

Professor Anthony Glees commended Mr. Healey’s approach but suggested that Britain should respond more swiftly to Russian provocations. The security expert highlighted the importance of being proactive in the face of Russia’s aggressive actions, such as the Yantar’s laser incidents. He emphasized the potential threat posed by the ship’s activities, including mapping underwater cables vital to UK’s connectivity with defense, intelligence, and business networks.

Professor Glees linked the Yantar’s behavior to a pattern of escalating Russian activities across Europe, citing drone intrusions, fighter jet violations, and other disruptive actions. This marks the second time this year that the Yantar has entered UK waters, raising concerns about its surveillance capabilities targeting critical infrastructure. Despite Russia’s claim that the Yantar is conducting research in international waters, the UK remains prepared with military options in case of further escalation.

Former MI6 chief Sir Richard Dearlove suggested that the Royal Navy might need to issue a warning to the Yantar if it gets too close, emphasizing the importance of avoiding unnecessary confrontations. The situation underscores the ongoing tensions between Russia and the UK, with defense officials monitoring closely for any potential threats.
