A power outage lasting four days at Western University in London, Ontario, has resulted in significant damage to essential research samples, disrupted ongoing experiments, and raised concerns among biology students and faculty about the university’s ability to safeguard millions of dollars’ worth of scientific research assets. Following a disruption at a campus power substation, the Biological & Geological Sciences Building, Materials Sciences Addition, Chemistry Building, and Natural Sciences Centre have been relying on backup power since Friday. While power has been restored to most buildings, the aforementioned four structures are still running on backup power as repair work continues. Access to these buildings has been restricted as a precautionary measure, with the university working closely with students, faculty, and staff to address individual concerns and ensure research requirements are met.

This incident marks the fifth major outage affecting biology research facilities since August 2025, prompting concerns among the university community. Biology professor Beth MacDougall-Shackleton expressed dismay over the lack of reliable power access, highlighting the detrimental impact on research activities such as maintaining stable conditions for living organisms and temperature-sensitive materials. The outage has led to overheating in growth chambers, thawing of research samples in freezers due to inadequate backup power, and hindered access to animals crucial for studies. Additionally, the department has incurred financial losses from replacing essential research materials like reagents and enzymes.

Graduate students, who have invested substantial time breeding insects, growing plants, and cultivating bacterial strains, face the potential loss of irreplaceable samples, including specimens from extinct species, collections dating back to the 1970s, and materials from long-term cohort studies. The impact of these losses extends beyond financial measures, with potential setbacks in research timelines and additional work for affected students.

Calls for action have been made by students and faculty, urging Western University to enhance communication during outages, invest in modernizing the campus electrical system, and bolster maintenance staff levels. Concerns have been raised about the university’s reputation, potential funding losses, and compliance with regulations governing research involving vertebrate animals. The repeated outages have also impeded researchers’ access to animal facilities, necessitating interventions to prevent overheating risks.

The ongoing challenges faced by the biology department at Western University underscore the need for proactive measures to mitigate future disruptions and safeguard valuable research assets and academic pursuits.
