The recent trial of a man from Saint John who was found guilty of fatally stabbing his two sons last year has deeply impacted many, leaving them questioning the circumstances leading to such a tragic event and how to prevent similar incidents. Roman Kamyshnyy, aged 46, received two concurrent life sentences without parole for 25 years following his conviction on two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of his 10 and 17-year-old sons.
According to domestic violence expert Peter Jaffe, while it may be difficult to comprehend, approximately 30 children are killed by a parent annually in Canada. Jaffe highlighted that about half of these cases, termed as filicides, occur in the context of intimate partner violence, often triggered by revenge when a woman leaves an abusive relationship, leading the ex-partner to harm the children as a way of hurting the woman.
A study released earlier this year revealed that New Brunswick recorded the highest number of domestic violence-related homicides in Atlantic Canada between 2012 and 2022, with a significant portion involving intimate partners. Mary Aspinall, an assistant professor specializing in criminology, emphasized that in cases where children are killed, they are often used as a tool to inflict additional harm on the other parent, typically the mother.
In Kamyshnyy’s case, the Crown argued that the murders were driven by vengeance, with him using his sons’ lives as a retaliatory weapon against his ex-wife following their separation. The tragic incident unfolded when the police discovered the boys’ bodies in the family’s apartment, where Kamyshnyy resided, alongside his failed suicide attempt.
The risk of harm during separations and the associated dynamics were highlighted as critical factors leading to domestic homicides. Experts underscored the importance of recognizing warning signs, updating assessment tools to evaluate risks towards children, and enhancing public awareness and education on healthy relationships to prevent such tragedies in the future.
