The Israeli government has issued a warning of escalating “targeted strikes” on Gaza unless Hamas intervenes to halt the launch of kites, some of which are flown by Palestinian children, into Israeli territory.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a social media post on X, disclosed that he and Defense Minister Israel Katz conducted a “situational assessment” to address the ongoing threat posed by drones, balloons, and kites originating from Gaza.

During the meeting, attended by Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir, head of the National Security Council, and IDF senior officials, Netanyahu conveyed Israel’s message to Hamas. He emphasized that if the kite launches persist, the IDF will intensify targeted strikes against those responsible and evacuate civilians from areas utilized as launch sites.

Netanyahu reiterated Israel’s stance of safeguarding its communities and citizens’ security from any threats posed by Hamas or other entities in Gaza.

Despite the tensions, for 13-year-old Omar Halawa, flying kites near Khan Younis provides a fleeting escape from the conflict. Omar shared that flying kites is a source of joy amidst the challenging circumstances in Gaza.

Expressing his innocence as a child, Omar mentioned that they do not engage in any hostile activities and simply yearn for a peaceful existence.

Prior to the outbreak of hostilities on Oct. 7, 2023, Israel reported incidents of incendiary kites and balloons from Gaza causing fires and damage. Recent discoveries of kites near a kibbutz have raised concerns, although no weaponry or hazardous materials were found attached to them.

Netanyahu’s latest stance comes following Israeli strikes that resulted in casualties, including two children, in various locations within Gaza. The conflict has claimed numerous lives on both sides since the outbreak of hostilities.

Hamas, in response to Netanyahu’s statements, accused Israel of escalating aggression against Palestinians, disregarding international law. The group urged international mediators to condemn Israel’s actions and push for a genuine ceasefire in Gaza.

Omar expressed fear about flying kites due to the potential risks posed by Israeli strikes, highlighting the pervasive sense of insecurity in the region. His mother, Yasmin Halawa, reflected on the challenges her son faces and the significance of simple joys like flying kites amid the turmoil.

As dusk fell, the children shifted their kite-flying activities closer to their dwellings, adapting to the evolving security situation in the region.
