A former renowned jockey, Luke Tarrant, has been detained on three armed robbery charges and is currently serving a 12-month racing disqualification for a separate offense. Tarrant was denied bail during his recent court appearance in Caloundra, Queensland, Australia.

The charges against Tarrant include armed robbery, entering premises with intent to commit a serious offense, and possession of dangerous drugs. The crime of robbery carries a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison, escalating to a potential life term for armed robbery cases involving violence or multiple perpetrators.

Scheduled to reappear in court on March 19, the 31-year-old Tarrant, known for his 502 career wins and three Group race victories, faced a significant setback in 2020 when he was suspended for six months for assaulting another jockey. Additionally, in October of the previous year, he was disqualified for a year for failing to cooperate with an inquiry into potential falsification of health assessment forms.

After being directed to participate in the inquiry by the Racing Integrity Commission, Tarrant failed to respond, leading to his disqualification. The Commission panel emphasized the importance of maintaining integrity in the industry and highlighted the obligation of licensed individuals to cooperate with investigations.

The stewards deemed a 12-month disqualification appropriate, effective from October 8, 2025, to October 8, 2026, to uphold the integrity and credibility of the racing sector.
