Members of a new left-wing initiative led by Jeremy Corbyn have officially chosen to rename their project “Your Party” during a recent conference in Liverpool. This decision followed a series of internal disputes within the group.
The conference attendees voted on various name options, including “Our Party,” “Popular Alliance,” and “For the Many,” but ultimately settled on “Your Party.” Jeremy Corbyn announced the outcome, stating, “Your Party is the name of Your Party.”
Moreover, the members opted for a committee of “ordinary members” to govern the party instead of traditional single leadership. The majority voted in favor of a collective leadership approach, with 51.6% supporting this model over the 48.4% who favored a single leadership structure. Consequently, both Jeremy Corbyn and former Labour MP Zarah Sultana are ineligible to run for leadership positions.
Zarah Sultana, who abstained from the conference’s initial day due to disagreements over expulsions, expressed excitement over the results. She emphasized the importance of member democracy and highlighted the party’s commitment to collective leadership, describing it as the beginning of a new socialist party focused on mass movement and member empowerment.
A spokesperson for Your Party emphasized the party’s commitment to a bottom-up approach, contrasting it with the traditional top-down political dynamics in Westminster. The spokesperson highlighted the party’s goal of offering a democratic, grassroots, and accountable alternative to the current political landscape.
