Gary Southgate’s dream has come to life with the inauguration of Eastend Scenic Rail Tours in southwest Saskatchewan’s Frenchman River Valley. The journey, showcasing the valley’s natural beauty, marked a significant moment for Southgate, a farmer from North Battleford, who has spent years collecting and restoring old trains to share the stories of the “Valley of Hidden Secrets.”
Southgate’s passion for trains dates back to his childhood when he would watch steam locomotives pass by. His collection now includes a variety of rail cars, with a particular focus on recreating the ambiance of the old Super Continental passenger trains. Some of his notable acquisitions include cars featured in the Polar Express films and the historic Cape Tormentime rail car used by Eleanor Roosevelt.
Despite facing challenges, such as disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the logistical complexities of managing the tour while operating a farm over 360 kilometers away, Southgate remains determined to see his vision through. With the support of Great Western Railway staff, Eastend Scenic Rail Tours has successfully conducted several trips this year, attracting visitors from far and wide.
Looking ahead, Southgate envisions expanding the tour experience by establishing amenities such as an RV park, a museum of vintage train equipment, and a dedicated facility for winter maintenance work. His ultimate goal is to preserve history and create a unique attraction that will leave a lasting impact on Eastend, Saskatchewan, and beyond.
