A couple faces charges following allegations of severe neglect of their children, described by a police official as one of the most distressing cases they have seen. Amberly Britton and Mark Myers have been accused of confining their three children, depriving them of food, and making them fend for themselves, alongside other disturbing claims of abuse. The children were reportedly so hungry that they resorted to breaking locks on cabinets to find food and were punished for vomiting due to extreme hunger.

The couple’s charges stem from a prolonged investigation triggered when one of their children arrived at school with a severe laceration that required medical attention. Britton and Myers neglected to attend to the injury promptly, raising concerns. Upon visiting the family’s Missouri home, authorities discovered hazardous and unhygienic living conditions, including extreme clutter, strong urine odors, lack of bedding, and an abundance of dirty dishes and debris.

Allegedly, the children were prevented from accessing food as the kitchen cabinets and refrigerator were locked. Britton and Myers claimed the locks were essential to monitor the children’s food intake. Despite being given opportunities to address safety hazards, no significant improvements were made, with the adults appearing evasive and uncooperative during investigations.

The children disclosed being frequently confined in their bedroom, sometimes overnight, and were forced to take care of themselves due to the adults’ negligence. They detailed instances of physical discipline, including being struck with various objects, as well as being locked inside their room with windows screwed shut to prevent escape. The unsanitary and uninhabitable conditions of the home were further exacerbated by a lack of heat and absence of basic necessities for the children.

Det. Sgt. Brian Adelsberger expressed shock at the severity of the neglect and abuse, labeling it as one of the most distressing cases he has encountered. Both Britton and Myers have been charged with drug trafficking and endangering the welfare of a child, with bail set at $250,000 cash-only for each.
