The man charged with the murder of conservative figure Charlie Kirk has appeared in court for the first time in person.

Tyler Robinson made his court appearance in Utah on Thursday, December 11, where he is facing charges of aggravated murder related to the shooting of Kirk on September 10.

Additional charges against Robinson include firearm use, obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and committing a violent offense in the presence of a child.

Kirk was shot in the neck during a speech at Utah Valley University.

The prosecution is seeking the death penalty in this case.

The 22-year-old defendant appeared in court restrained at the waist, wrists, and ankles, dressed in a light-blue shirt, tie, and beige pants. His family members were present in the front row of the courtroom, according to Associated Press News agency.

The court session addressed matters concerning public access to the proceedings.

During the hearing, State District Court Judge Tony Graf temporarily halted the live broadcast due to Robinson’s attorneys’ objection to the camera showing the defendant’s restraints, which violated a court order, as reported by AP.

Judge Graf warned that further violations could lead to a complete ban on future broadcasts. A prior order from October prohibits media from displaying images of Robinson in restraints or outside the defense table area.

The judge is also deliberating on balancing the public’s right to information with concerns raised by Robinson’s defense about potential trial bias due to media coverage. Both the defense team and the Utah County Sheriff’s Office have requested a camera ban in the courtroom, a matter still pending a decision.

Several media outlets are advocating for continued media coverage of this high-profile case.

In a previous closed hearing on October 24, discussions revolved around Robinson’s dress code and security measures. Following a ruling, Robinson is required to be physically restrained due to security reasons, with media restrictions in place to prevent prejudice against potential jurors.
