Canadian swimming sensation Summer McIntosh has set ambitious goals for the upcoming Los Angeles Olympics in two years: to clinch five individual gold medals. Her preparations over the past year have been focused on this target. The Pan Pacific swimming championships, taking place in the same city where she aims to shine in 2028, will serve as a crucial gauge of her current standing.

Upon arriving for the competition, McIntosh, who will turn 20 next week, expressed her excitement and anticipation for the upcoming Games. Reflecting on her flight to California, she described the awe-inspiring moment of seeing the stadium and visualizing her aspirations. She emphasized the significance of being in the state where the Olympics will be held, underscoring the importance of the location.

Having secured three gold medals at the Paris Olympics, McIntosh has emerged as a prominent figure in the world of swimming. She currently holds four individual long-course world records in the 200m butterfly, 200m individual medley, 400m freestyle, and 400m individual medley. Her most recent accomplishment was breaking the women’s 200m butterfly world record during the Canadian trials in Montreal, a feat that stood since 2009.

Following her record-breaking performance, McIntosh faced a setback as she withdrew from the trials due to illness. However, she has since recovered and is fully prepared for the Pan Pacific championships. This event marks her debut at the Pan Pacs, which was canceled in 2022 due to challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Under the guidance of renowned coach Bob Bowman, McIntosh is gearing up to compete in her first major international event. Her lineup includes the 200m freestyle, 200m individual medley, 400m freestyle, and 400m individual medley. While acknowledging the intensity of the competition and the short duration of the event, McIntosh remains optimistic and eager to showcase her skills on the global stage.

Looking ahead to the Pan Pacs, McIntosh and coach Bowman have aimed to peak during this competition. With high expectations and a strong training regimen, McIntosh is poised to deliver an exceptional performance. She views this event as a crucial step towards her ultimate goal of success at the Los Angeles Olympics, emphasizing the excitement surrounding the upcoming challenges and opportunities.
